The city belongs to horse lovers for one week each year before the Velka Pardubicka. However, you would be wasting your time looking for cutaway coats and noblesse hats in the wardrobes of these fans, and the reason is simple – their loved horses are hidden under the hood of roaring motorcycles. Since 1929, the best racers in the world and their admirers from all corners of the world, even as far as Australia, have been gathering at the Pardubice speedway stadium to battle for the Golden Helmet. The first speedway motorcycle race took place on the initiative of Františka Hladěny (1903-1942) on the grass track of the racecourse. Since the 2nd year (1930), international participants have taken part and since 1964 the race has been held on the cinder track of the speedway stadium in Pardubice - Svítkova.
